Nomex is extremely heat resistant. It chars at 600° F ( 315° C ), begins to decompose at 700° ( 357° C ), and does not melt. This makes Nomex a great thread for safety garments such as fire fighting gear, automobile racing suits, and flight suits where there is potential high heat exposure.
Important
– Safety garments are mostly fabric and other materials and thread is a very small part of the garment. If these other materials are significantly
less
or
more
heat resistant than the thread, overall safety will be compromised. Please note that fire retardant is NOT fire-proof. For example, these threads will burn when exposed to a 2500°F (1357°C) cigarette lighter.
Strength
– Nomex is strong enough for sewing seams on clothing and other projects that require normal thread strength. For example, the break strength for a middleweight ( Size 92 ) Nomex is about 9 pounds. This compares to 15 pounds for non-fire retardant nylon and polyester and 35 pounds for fire retardant Kevlar. Bottom line, Nomex is the best choice for normal fire retardant sewing.
Size
– We use U.S. commercial sizes to specify the Nomex thread thickness and show equivalent government and TEX sizes in our specifications. With Nomex thread thickness and strength increase as the commercial size increases; the number of yards in a pound of thread decreases as size increases. Here are some guidelines for selecting the thread size best suited to your task:
Lightweight Sizes 23 to 69
– Use for sewing seams and embroidering names on clothing such as racing suits and shirts.
You must have a commercial sewing machine to sew thread that is thicker than Size 69.
Middleweight Sizes 92 to 277
– Use for sewing seams on heavy duty garments such as fire jump suits and thick gloves and boots. Also joining or repairing hoses and tubing.
Heavyweight Sizes 346 and Higher
– Use for joining or repairing conveyer belts and for fire retardant linings and wrappings
Tex
– A thread’s “Tex” refers to its thickness. A higher “Tex” number means a thicker thread. As Tex increases: (1) The thread’s strength increases; (2) The needle size increases; (3) The number of yards per pound decreases.

When exposed to flame at room temperature in a normal air environment, NOMEX
will
not continue to burn when the flame is removed.
NOMEX
: A manufactured fiber in which the fiber forming substance is a long chain synthetic polyamide in which at least 85% of the amide linkages are attached directly to two aromatic rings.
EFFECT OF HEAT
: Does not melt. Decomposes at about 700° F.
EFFECTS OF ACIDS & ALKALIS
: Unaffected by most acids, except some strength loss after long exposure to hydrochloric, nitrics and sulfuric. Generally good resistance to alkalis.
EFFECTS OF BLEACHES & SOLVENTS
: Unaffected by most bleaches and solvents except slight strength loss from exposure to sodium chlorite.
RESISTANCE TO MILDEW, AGING, SUNLIGHT, ABRASION
: Excellent resistance to mildew and aging. Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes some strength loss. Good abrasion resistance
